Catocala violenta

Catocala violenta
upper parking lot, Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
July 26, 2013
came to mercury vapor light

ID
Catocala noegama ssp. euphemia was suggested for the ID of this one on my inaturalist cross post: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/10228087. Maybe move it back to genus?

violenta
No, it definitely does not appear to be C. neogama ssp. euphemia. The AM line is correct for violenta and not C. neogama euphemia, and this specimen also possesses the secondary line that somewhat parallels the PM line (between the PM line and reniform spot), which is not typical in C. neogama euphemia. It also has the closed, more oblong (some say "lemon-shaped") subreniform spot, unlike the angular ("pork chop-shaped") or dimpled--and often open--subreniform spot seen on C. neogama euphemia.

This specimen scores well as a violenta, just a bit worn.

Moved
Moved from Underwings.

This is funny, This one was never placed but this very image is used with your name on MPG!

Moved
Moved from Moths.

My guess is 8853
Catocala violenta.

Catocala
It's one of the underwings.

ID
Okay, I remember this guy now. It was an underwing. The underwings were red and black (if that helps with ID). It was not cooperative and this is the only shot I could get.

Thanks!

HW
I should also note with my comments above, that if the HW were red and black, that indicates violenta as well, as C. neogama euphemia HWs are black banded with yellow-orange to orange coloration.

ID
Could be totally off base, but markings remind me a bit of Plataea sp.?
