Hickory Horned Devil - Citheronia regalis

Hickory Horned Devil - Citheronia regalis
Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina, USA
September 6, 2006
1st larve of this size I've ever seen. This was an exceptional year for butterfly and moth larve variety around here. Usually all I see are tent caterpillars.

I've linked these two images
since they are clearly of the same caterpillar. You can save yourself filling out two forms when you're posting multiple images by clicking "add image" under the first one you posted - a mostly-filled-out form appears and the images are linked. Usually two images should show different angles and features e.g. side and top - these are virtually the same, but it's a good-looking caterpillar so I'm not frassing either at present. : )
