Georgia Cicada - Neotibicen tibicen

Georgia Cicada - Neotibicen tibicen
Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, USA
August 19, 2013
I saw and heard this very loud cicada on the trunk of one of our maple trees. I looked through the cicadas in the guide and did not see one with the same markings as this one. Anyone know what species it might be?

EXCELLENT CALL!!!
T. tibicen ssp. australis it is!
Makes me happy.... :)

I think this cicada is one of the most difficult for many to recognize. Several traits conform to other taxa and that causes id. problems.

The vivid GREEN legs and large white spots at the base of the abdomen are the best "quick check" characters. This species is also perhaps more vividly colored than is pruinosus or most lyricen (except virescens).

thank you so much
Thank you so much for the identification. We have lots of cicadas in our garden at the Americus Garden Inn Bed and Breakfast and this one was so incredibly beautiful, I just had to know what it was.

I'm just guessing here...
Even though it looks a lot like a Tibicen Pruinosus and that certain color of rusty brown pushes my Tibicen Lyricen buttons, all that green has a Tibicen tibicen feel to me. So, I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking it's a Tibicen tibicen australis:

I'd wait for Bill Reynolds to weigh in before placing any bets, though.

I was also guessing T. tibicen
But the coloration is just beautiful on this individual. However, you might be right about the T. tibicen australis subspecies.
