Curculionid - Liometophilus manni

Curculionid - Liometophilus manni
8.2 km W of Portal, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 7, 2013
Size: ~4.2mm
Found in oak/juniper woodland, approx. 5900ft.

I overturned a rock that had a Liometopum nest under it. Several (4 collected) Haeterius scrambled about on the soil surface, heading for the ant tunnel and trying to get down into the nest. As I was wrangling the Haeterius, I also checked out the underside of the rock to see if anything was there. There was a small spherical dimple on the rock underside. At first really quick glance, there appeared to be 2 giant collembolans ducking in and out of the spherical dimple. When I was done dealing with the Haeterius I got a closer look at the giant collembolans and it turned out they weren't collembolans at all, but instead individuals of this beautiful beetle!
