Neon Skimmer for California in September - Libellula croceipennis

Neon Skimmer for California in September - Libellula croceipennis
Peters Canyon, Orange, Orange County, California, USA
September 30, 2006

Moved
Moved from Flame Skimmer.

Ron, there has been some discussion
on the ID of the Flame and Neon Skimmers with Tim's new postings. Based on his research, we added some identification photos to the INFO pages of both species. It looks like the guide images are all correct now except we're not sure about this one. We asked Hartmut to look at it since he had a relatively similar image that he decided was Neon, but he said he just couldn't be sure about yours. We have the sense that the amber patches are small and the body is very red which makes us lean toward Neon on this one, but we can't be sure either. Don't know if you can remember back to September, or if you have other images of this guy, but we figure we need to leave it to you whether to call this Neon or Flame. Just wanted to let you know there was some question, but you have the final call!

Thanks; neon it is
I thought all my skimmers were IDed by experts, but this one wasn't. (It's an old point-and-shoot image.) One look at the original photo convinced me it was neon.

...
...disregard

Tim has the same impression
that we have, see his comments on 26454, but he is just as uncertain.

I'd have said neon on that one.
But I refuse to say why, as my method is highly suspect and no doubt laughable. Hey, even I am chuckling.
