good guess, but need a dorsal view to tell
for beetle identification purposes, the single most important piece of imagery is straight dorsal view; other angles, if posted alone, tend to be of little, if any, diagnostic value

Thank you
There are countless times I've photographed the bug from the "artistic" view and completely forgot to get a pulled back image. This is an example of that situation. Thanks for the input. Photographing the insect from different angles is definitely sometime I need to build into my work.

conflicting tasks
Unfortunately, all too often aesthetic considerations prove incompatible with diagnostic ones; to get a reliable ID, one should overcome artistic temptations like fancy angles, creative lighting, etc. Think of images we need to give you names as passport photos: a photographer wouldn’t include those in his portfolio or display in a gallery, but border authorities have very different requirements :]
So take some routine, dull shots at standard angles to post on BugGuide for identification – and some creative ones for art’s sake!
