You're good to genus: Variegated Meadowhawk
AKA Sympetrum corruptum. I'm surprised you didn't run into these at San Joaquin. They're often thick around the Tree Hill parking lot.

If looking for dragonflies, there were a load at Irvine Park yesterday, in the part of the lake adjacent to the train tracks. They're often perched on flotsam, but typically a bit far from shore to shoot. Black saddlebags, amberwings, green darners, red skimmers and blue dashers were in attendance around noon.

FYI, Autumn meadowhawk appears to be out of range for OC, but it is found elsewhere in the state.

great species...... corruptum! I've seen them at the marsh, but they didn't ever sit down! It was very dewy this morning, and I think his wings could have been a little damp.

Right now I'm interested in about everything! I'm tired of birds; I do want to know more about bees; and I want to know all the critters I run into on the search for bees! Not too interested in plants other than the names I've picked up along the way. But, I am curious about most things.... degree varies.

I particularly like native bees, too. And wasps.
Also, I'm not big on flowers, but look for mallow in bloom for small, quick bees.

Single best place I've found for bees is Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Group - search them here - in Claremont.
