Buprestid - Dicerca obscura

Buprestid - Dicerca obscura
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
October 12, 2006
Size: 18 mm
I'm positive this is a Dicerca, which I found and photographed only hours before the first snowfall of the year blew into Guelph. Is it possible to ID this to species?

Dicerca obscura
I do believe that this is a Dicerca obscura. This species and some others of the genus can be found throughout the year. Great find and photo.

Host records.
In Nelson's 1975 revision, Dicerca obscura is mentioned being reared from Diospyros virginiana(persimmon) and Rhus sp., Knull recorded rearing it from Rhus typhina(Staghorn Sumac). It has also been collected on oaks and hickorys.
I have had luck on all of these except the Sumac, that is a new one for me.

Thanks Joshua!
That makes a lot of sense; I think all three host plants that you mentioned are present around my area, especially Rhus typhina, of which there are several varieties here. Figures ... I happen to live close to an arboretum that has very many tree species, no doubt there would be a lot of oaks and hickoies. Thanks again!

Thanks Joshua
It was a great find indeed. Just out of curiousity, I was wondering whether or not this species has larval host plants other than persimmon?

I am sure that it does, I can
I am sure that it does, I can't think of any off hand but I'll check and get back to asap.
