Tiny fly - Anarete - male

Tiny fly - Anarete - Male
Minburn Road near Beaver Creek, Dallas County, Iowa, USA
August 24, 2013
Size: 1.7 mm
As I was driving into Granger to get my early morning diet coke, newspaper, and cookies I saw clouds rising from the vegetation in the roadside ditch. It was thousands of these tiny flies, apparently in some kind of lek activity. I was able to capture a small number with my hand, and this is the best photo I was able to get. I would guess the larva are aquatic and live in the mud of nearby Beaver Creek. Second and third attached photos show the lek swarms.
