re: the crests
do you know if there is a distinct pattern that distinguishes this from genus Tynomma? See comments at

I'm not sure if the crest pattern would distinguish Abacion from Tynomma, but geography and the gonopods certainly would. Abacion ranges from Texas east to the coast, while Tynomma is in central California and southwest Utah.

Rowland Shelley published a summary of western US Callipodida, "The milliped order Callipodida in western North America (Schizopetalidae: Tynommatinae), and a summary of the New World Fauna" in Ent. scand 27: 25-64 in 1996, that publication might help you if you're trying to learn more about this genus and others. Dr. Shelley references H.F. Loomis' 1937 publication about the family, then known as Lysiopetalidae, which is available for free here: http://si-pddr.si.edu/dspace/bitstream/10088/16254/1/USNMP-84_3006_1937.pdf.

Feel free to email me (check my profile) if you have any questions. I have a lot to learn myself, and I'm focused on eastern US millipedes, but it's great to hear from others interested in the group.
