Crape Myrtle Beetles - Halyomorpha halys

Crape Myrtle Beetles - Halyomorpha halys
Sayville, Suffolk County, New York, USA
August 10, 2013
Size: approx 1/8th inch
I found these interesting little creatures on the bottom of a Crape Myrtle leaf. At first glance they looked like lady bugs but at closer inspection I could see they were a bit more ominous looking and thought better of leaving them there. So I clipped the leaf and put it into a zip lock bag where they survived for several days and it looks as though what I assumed were eggs actually hatched and it seemed the adults lost the red/black shells. I haven't noticed any more since that one time. Would like to knwo what they were if you could help.

stink bugs, yes...
I also found these insects on an apple tree this fall, and I'll paste the photos, which look like the photo you posted: little red insects on 8/8/2013 that were black on 8/11/2013.

This EPA link shows the Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, and I see no instar in either red or the black.

Thank you very much. Glad I caught them when I did.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug nymphs…
Crape myrtle is mentioned as one of the numerous hosts, so this species seems likely.
