I've become interested in A. architectus subspecies
Is this A. a. metallicus, because it is in the west?

Yes...
but, in my opinion, the subspecies of some spider wasps defined by Henry Townes are rather weak.
A. a. metallicus
is pretty well-defined on the Pacific coast, but further east (near the Rocky Mountains), along the interface where the subspecies meet you would want to have a significant series of material for comparison. Separating the subspecies along this area of interface is dicey from photos. Complicating this, the group including this species,
A. caerulescens
, and
A. nigrellus
is in serious need of a modern revision and are difficult to separate from photos alone.
