Tarantula Hawk with Tarantula - Pepsis mildei - female

Tarantula Hawk with Tarantula - Pepsis mildei - Female
Naval Air Station Miramar, San Diego, San Diego County, California, USA
July 14, 1996
Size: about 30 mm
At dusk I saw this tarantula hawk dragging the tarantula across a road. I stopped and followed her with my camera. She dragged the tarantula (which was a small specimen) over various obstacles until she reached this hole. I had to guess at the manually set exposure, with a flash unit on a bracket, and luckily guessed right -- there were no second chances!

Pepsis mildei
This is a Pepsis mildei.

Moved from Tarantula Hawks.

Thanks...
It's one of my favorites. A lucky shot, though!

sweet pic!
