Monarch for California for October - Danaus plexippus

Monarch for California for October - Danaus plexippus
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
October 14, 2006
Subject was very battered, with a large hole in left wing and tip missing on the right. On the plus side, it was low and hard to spook, so I thought I'd see if I could get some nice shots. This is the first time I've been able to get this close at these angles on a monarch, tho found that easy with tiger swallowtails.

This is a beautiful specimen.

I thank you and the butterfly thanks you.
This was part of a series whereby I shot a Monarch a month at the same place to show that they were in Orange County year 'round and that they continued to breed, as opposed to simply over-wintering here.

This is the single best place for Monarchs in the area, made very hospitable by the planting of six varieties of milkweed, originally under the direction of CSUF prof Bob Allen.
