"Olympic Swimmer" Hunter - Calosoma externum - Female
O'Fallon, St. Charles County, Missouri, USA
August 30, 2013
Size: 32 mm
I found this Calosoma-type beetle treading water in a local swimming pool.

My first thought when I saw it swimming for dear life was that it was just another Calosoma sayi (common around here). However, once I rescued it from drowning, I was able to take a closer look at it and realized it wasn't a C. sayi at all, but something else. So, I secured it in a little bug carrier (which I keep with me whenever I'm out and about), and brought it home.

As seems to be the case with all hunter beetles, it's overly stimulated and wired to the max. Therefore, after a disastrous first photo-shoot in which just about every photo was blurry, I decided to cool the little bugger down in the refrigerator. That seems to have done the trick and calmed it down enough for me to snap some halfway decent photos for I.D.'ing it down to the species.

Anyway, long story short, after searching around on Bugguide, I believe this is a Calosoma externum. However, I am not 100 percent positive and would appreciate any help in positively I.D.'ing it.
