Cornfield ant (Lasius neoniger) - Lasius neoniger
Elbow, 9 mi S at Douglas Provincial Park, Saskatchewan, Canada
August 29, 2013
Size: varying 1/2" and smaller
Found many clusters into and around small ant holes in campgrounds at Douglas Provincial Park. Photo taken just before dark when we arrived. Very sandy soil at Diefenbaker Lake. Sand Dunes 5 miles to the E of here. Not termites, from searches online these look like the black garden ant, Lasius niger. But can not find much on this site about them unless I'm not looking in the right place. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

The status of Eurasian L*niger in North America is in need of an update.

This is the native North American L. neoniger, based on the sandy habitat and time of day when the activity was observed. The picture doesn't nail the ID, but the ecology does.

Comparable picture form a good ways to the southeast of your sighting
