Universal. In North America, seen primarily from British Columbia south through California, with records from Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Requires a humid environment for development.

Larva is known to feed on a wide variety of dry materials, including bird nests, furs and skins, seeds, stored cereals, insect specimens, upholstery and carpets, book bindings and wine corks.
