Fruit Fly - Euaresta bullans

Fruit Fly - Euaresta bullans
Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 20, 2012
I believe this fruit fly is Euaresta bullans, which would be new to BugGuide. The species (native to South America) has apparently been introduced into California where it feeds on Xanthium (which was plentiful in the area). I submit these links as well for comparison purposes:
Photo of wing markings and species description of E. bullans
Photographs of an identical fly ID'd as E. bullans from diptera.info
Anoter photo of an identical fly ID'd as E. bullans

If anybody more familiar with the Tephritidae can take a look at this one and confirm, it would be much appreciated.

Can't see the antennae clearly, but, as mentioned in the description, the subapical dark spot in wing cell r4+5 is, indeed, much broader than in either cells r1 or r2+3. This distinguishes this species from other Euaresta. Since you also mentioned the host Xanthium as being in the area, this suggests a match. EOL also mentions an occurrence of this species in California. Nice work, Chris.

Many thanks
for taking a look at this one Ross. Should I go ahead and create a new guide page for the species?

I went back through my files to see if I had any other photos to better show the antennae, but apparently I only got 2 photos of this one - it wasn't until much later that I realized it wasn't one of the much more common fruit flies that I usually see. Ahh, maybe next time.
