Identification
Excerpts from Edwards, 2004:
"...None of the species apparently have lateral bands II, although since all of them have an extensive to complete abdominal dorsal scale cover, it is difficult to be sure of this. Two distinct clades are represented in this group, with a basal species,
P. morpheus, which is transitional from the
johnsoni group. There are two basic body types, an all yellow to red dorsum which includes
P. morpheus and all members of the
aureus clade except
P. ursulus (with
P. apacheanus exhibiting both types of abdominal pattern), or with only a yellow to red abdominal dorsum (
P. purpuratus may be white or gray as well) which may be mostly divided by a median black stripe (all the
borealis clade plus
P. ursulus)..."
