Northern Oak or Eastern-tailed Blue Hairstreak? - Strymon melinus

Northern Oak or Eastern-tailed Blue Hairstreak? - Strymon melinus
Lake Monticello, Fluvanna County, Virginia, USA
July 4, 2010
I have photos of two hairstreaks that I've titled, but not sure they are right. Espec. the Eastern-tailed Blue which was ID'd by a butterfly site. Are both of these butterflies the same species or different ones? I'm totally confused after looking at so many photos. Date for the one on phlox is 7/4/10 and the date for the one on green-headed coneflower is 7/23/06. Can you solve this mystery for me? Thanks so much! Donna

Moved from ID Request.

Both look like Gray hairstreaks (Strymon melinus) to me.

Since they are different individuals they should be unlinked and submitted separate.

Which butterfly
I thought they were both Northern Oak ... so you're saying neither one of them are Northern Oak or Eastern-tailed Blue?

Both are Gray hairstreaks
The spot pattern for eastern tailed blues is very different .
Northern Oak has a blue spot on the hindwing below which neither of these specimens have.
