Annual Cicada - Megatibicen resonans

Annual Cicada - Megatibicen resonans
Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, USA
September 2, 2013
Size: 2.5"
Small pine forest area in a county park is abuzz with these right now. I observed about a dozen or so and took photos and measurements. Average size was 2.5 inches.
When detained they shriek quiet loudly, however if you slowly offer them your finger they seem happy to walk right onto your hand.

Excellent views!
Just about everyone neglects the ventral view which is one of the most important views! I'm tickled pink that you got the ventral shot for us!

Thank you!

Hello Shannon!
The coloration of this individual is greatly representative of the Southern Resonant cicada, Tibicen resonans. You can of course tell that this is a male by the presence of the tymbals as well as the lack of an ovipositor. Lovely find and good job at getting the dorsal, ventral, and medial views of the specimen.

Well, I agree.
Now, we just need Bill Reynolds to blow us out of the water! :)

Take a look
Notice the pronotal pattern and how similar it is to resh :)

There have been reports of resh here in the southeast beyond Biloxi, but these id's are likely based on old discolored resonans in collections.
