more detail?
Very cool beetle! Never saw anything in this family all the years that I collected in MD and WV. Can you please give some more detail as to where and how you found it?

strange habitat
Under a Tulip-tree log that had been cut a few years ago. There were numerous other beetle larvae, like synchroids, pyrochroids, and some Cucujus pupae (Found in Shenk's Ferry wildflower preserve, one of my great bugging spots).

These guys are certainly not common. I've seen 2 in my life; 1 appeared in my tent the morning after a blacklight-camp trip not far from Shenk's Ferry. That one confuses me as to where it came from. That one if here: (1)

Definitely interesting beetles though. They look like little black balls at first.

thanks
thanks, will have to look for some next trip south. i don't think these occur in maine!
