Mantis in CA - Mantis religiosa - female

Mantis in CA - Mantis religiosa - Female
Monterey, Monterey County, California, USA
September 3, 2013
Size: 3 inches
I found this Mantis in the driveway. It walked slowly into a glass jar placed in front of it and I observed it for a while, and then let it go next to a large fence near the corner of our yard. It climbed up all the way to the top of the fence, and is still there, about 3-4 hours later, hiding under the ledge on the top of the fence. It never flew. I would like to know the correct species name of this specimen and its sex.

Mantis religiosa
Jimmy is right, this is a characteristically light colored western European mantis, an adult female.

Thank you, John!

European mantid
From what I can see, it seems to be a European mantid (Mantis religiosa). From the number of abdomen segments, I would say this is an adult female.

Thank you, Jimmy!
