mushroom fly - Diacrita costalis

mushroom fly - Diacrita costalis
Pima Canyon, Santa Catalina Mts., Pima County, Arizona, USA
September 26, 2006
Size: very~4-7mm
There were at least 50 to 100 of these swarmed on a mushroom just past its prime. Would like to know the ID and if it is somehow reproductively (or otherwise) obligatory on some kind of mushroom.

This fly is Diacrita costalis
This fly is Diacrita costalis, family Ulidiidae ('Otitidae'). I didn't know they were attracted to mushrooms; they have been reared from rotting cacti, and this was considered to be their usual home.

Me curious, too!
My girlfriend found one of these while we were at the Molino Canyon Vista on the Mt. Lemmon highway, but she found it on foliage. I wonder if it is not in the family Pallopteridae?

Question..
I have seen these flies before, and when I went to use a field guide to ID them, I noticed it wasn't what has been identified here.. and this has happened a lot with some other insects that differ from this one guide I have, I have the National Audobon Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders.. Could their ID's be wrong?? For this particular fly (identical) it has it listed as a Pyrgotid fly, when I look up pyrgotid on this site I get something COMPLETELY different.. I personally trust this site more, but really.. this book seems to be WAY off.. does this happen often?
