Unknown Insect - Chelinidea vittiger

Unknown Insect - Chelinidea vittiger
Sulphur Springs (Cooper Lake State Park), Hopkins County, Texas, USA
October 14, 2006
There were a number of these crawling on prickly pears in the park. The ranger that was doing our nature hike didn't know what they are. We had a group of Cub Scouts who were interested in knowing what they were. Thanks!

maybe
True bugs?? Hemiptera? Not sure specifically what though.

Charles

Yes
I agree with Charles. A number of Hemipterans specialize in cacti; if you browse through our Hemiptera photos you will notice a good number that have cacti backgrounds.

Chelinidea vittiger.
These are nymphs of Chelinidea vittiger, family Coreidae. Very common, but not on all cacti. Like most hemipterans, they are very selective as to which individual plants they decide to colonize. You can look at many, many prickly pears without finding a single bug, then 'boom!,' there are a couple dozen on one plant:-)

Thanks!
Wow, thanks for the quick response y'all. I'm hoping that the kids keep up their interest in insects.

Thanks again!
