Lady Beetle - Hyperaspis conviva - male

Lady Beetle - Hyperaspis conviva - Male
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Lake County, Indiana, USA
May 26, 2013

Moved from Lady Beetles.

Hyperaspis, possibly H. conviva
H. conviva can generally be distinguished from other members of the Hyperaspis signata group by the dorsoventral flattening - it's much less convex (dome-shaped) than other species in the group.

The pronotal margins are a little narrower than is typical of H. conviva, though. I'll key it out and see if I can find out more.

Hyperaspis conviva - male
I've keyed it out twice and I keep getting H. conviva; the width of the pronotal margin does vary, so that isn't bothering me anymore.

Only the males have white markings on the head and pronotum; the female head and pronotum are entirely black.

Thanks so much!
Thanks so much!

new species for BugGuide
If you like to keep track of your BugGuide firsts, this is the first image we have of the species. There are some photos that are probably H. conviva in the "unidentified signata group" node, but nothing I felt comfortable actually ID'ing as such.
