Red mite

Red mite
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
September 6, 2013
Size: ~2mm body length
Found in moss. Fairly slow moving, curls its legs in and plays dead when nudged, but starts moving again after half a minute or so.

I'll be keeping it for a couple of days, so if there are any other angles or areas where more detail would be helpful, I can try to get them.

Very interesting!
Years later, I am just as amazed by this mite. What a beauty! I am now convinced that I see a pre-genital tubercle on the ventral shot, which identifies this as a truly fascinating and very rarely encountered group--Tanaupodidae. There is only one genus known from western North America (Lassenia), however the diversity of this group is so poorly known that I am not comfortable with a genus-level ID at this time. Wonderful find! And beautiful photographs!

I am collecting in that area this fall and hopefully will find specimens! It is only through examining specimens that we can hope to understand these poorly-known creatures.

Great find and nice images!
This is certainly not a commonly photographed beast. Well done! I am in great need of specimens in this group. Would you be willing to send me this specimen? I would be able to give you a generic ID if you do.

Thanks
Thanks! I ended up putting this one back where I found it a few days ago. I don't harm or kill any of the critters I photograph, so they're released once I finish working with them.
