Would this spider be the Carolina Wolf Spider - Lycosa carolinensis? It was a bit over an inch in diameter, as I recall.

Nursery web spider.
This is actually a nursery web spider in the genus Pisaura, family Pisauridae. Nice images. One heck of a web she can spin...oh, wait, that's a rope:-)
