Hoverfly? with narrow abdomen - Xanthomelanodes
Hwy. 41, west of Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA

This beautiful fly seems to be a hoverfly, but with a narrow abdomen. Can anyone help with the ID? Thanks in advance.

Proably arcuatus
Probably Xanthomelanodes arcuatus. The other species in California has slightly more widely separated eyes. The difference is not great, eye width .20 vs. .25 of head width.

Xanthomelanodes sp., a tachinid
not related to hoverflies --many of which, incidentally, have very narrow abdomen, e.g.:
