Wasp - Pepsis mildei - female

Wasp - Pepsis mildei - Female
Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, USA
September 11, 2013
Size: 3 inches
I found this insect climbing my tomato plant and I thought it was a Mantis I had put out a few month's ago. I picked it up and it stung me twice. At first I thought it had bitten me. It was pretty painful. Does anyone know what type of wasp this is? I've never seen this one before. I commonly have small yellow wasp's in my yard.

Looks like the tarantula hawk Pepsis mildei.
It's the only one with orange antennae. Reported to have a very painful sting, but I have had only amicable relations with them.

Nice image, sorry about the stings! This is a Spider wasp; the subfamily is Pepsinae. I have moved it to the subfamily Pepsinae.
