UFO - Tremex columba - Female

Size: 3 inches without tail
This flies through my yard every year during the summer. In flight it has a tail that splits open into 3 to 4 parts and extends another inch from its body. This looks like a wasp but it is MUCH bigger. I have no idea what this is. Can anyone identify this?

Yes, Tremex columba. The "tail" is the ovipositor and ovipositor sheath.
