Possible Chigger mites
If I had seen the chiggers I would have taken more pictures/
I was lucky to have captured them as I did and It baffled me they would be attacking an insect. I know there are big mite, just didn’t think chiggers , like what I encounter would be attacking a beetle.
Does anyone know when chiggers stop becoming a problem in the forest. These come by the millions and if you’re lucky you know they are on you. Thank you Kathleen Chute

Bess beetle
Moved from ID Request. The beetle is a bess beetle, Odontotaenius disjunctus.

The mites you see are not "chiggers". Bess beetles have quite a few different mites associated with them, and there are tens of thousands of mite species.

The mites responsible for what we call chigger bites feed on various animals (mostly if not all mammals) but not insects. You can read more about chiggers here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trombiculidae.

Well didnt I think I was a smaty pants.
I have always looked at these beetles and other beetle species with these lines as Paton leather beetles. So I am forever a student here at bugguide.
I believe have one picture better of this beetle.

I am very interested in starting a conversation in the forum about chiggers. The summer in a waste if you cannot enjoy it. I will be getting out in nature soon and would hope to avoid them, but my Photography sprit says catch some and try to photograph them. There doesn’t seem to be very many pictures out there. Thank you for the information and I appreciate the time spent on the explanation. Kathleen
