Midge Galls on Mockernut Hickory leaf (dried) - Caryomyia

Midge Galls on Mockernut Hickory leaf (dried) - Caryomyia
Sag Harbor, Long Pond Greenbelt, North Side, Suffolk County, New York, USA
September 16, 2013
Size: 2-3 mm
I found these hairy galls on the underside of a Mockernut Hickory (Carya tomentosa) leaf. Based on other pictures, I believe them to be from the gall midge, Caryomyia purpurea. Guess they aren't purple all the time! Are they more purple when first created?

The purple part...
is the inner lining. There are several different fuzzy, ~spherical hickory midge galls, and cutting them open longitudinally helps a lot when trying to ID them.
