Queen - Danaus gilippus - male

Queen - Danaus gilippus - Male
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
September 8, 2013
This slightly tattered butterfly was on Scale-Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum) in coastal sage scrub at the Claremont College's Bernard Field Station. Apparently these are only temporary colonists in LA County, and this was the first one I've seen at the field station. Climbing Milkweed (Funastrum cynanchoides var.hartwegii) and Indian Milkweed (Asclepias eriocarpa), which are host plants for the Queen do occur at the field station.

Identification confirmed by Ken Davenport at Butterflies and Moths of North America. The black patches on the hindwing indicate that this is a male.

They are residents of Orange and San Diego Counties.
Riley Wilderness Park comes to mind, but they're scarce there.
