Grasshopper that bites or stings - Conocephalus strictus - female

Grasshopper that bites or stings - Conocephalus strictus - Female
Inman, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA
September 20, 2013
Size: 1.5 inches
These were all around my back door today. I caught one for my grandson, but while I was holding it, I felt a sharp bite or sting. Never been bitten by a grasshopper & wondered what kind it is.

female Conocephalus strictus
These little critters can barely even bite; their mouths are too small. The ovipositor might be able to poke a little, but not enough to do any harm to us.

Moved from ID Request.

I beg to differ!
She bit the tar out of my thumb!

Not a grasshopper (But closely related)
A species of meadow katydid. They bite in defense but cannot sting. The "stinger" is actually this female's ovipositor (egg laying tube).

Katydid
Thank you! I always liked katydids, but I thought they were friendlier! I guess she misinterpreted my intentions! :)
