weevil - Derelomus subcostatus

weevil - Derelomus subcostatus
Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 18, 2012
A couple summers back I posted a photo of this weevil to which =v= suggested Notolomus but remarked that sharper pics were needed to be sure... well, it's been a couple years but I finally found the weevil again. Hope these pics are sharp enough?

Note: the pics against the white background may or may not be the same individual as those against the blue wetsuit background. I'm linking the images now for convenience's sake but I will unlink them once they are reviewed.

Derelomus subcostatus?
In August of this year the Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services reported the presence of Derelomus subcostatus in Florida. In its description, it states that "this weevil has been in California for at least three years". Included is a color photograph of the species. The full report in pdf form in available here

That Skelly pub.
The "here" leads nowhere.
Search for "Derelomus subcostatus Skelley (2015), Trii-ology" and you will find it.

thanks again -- updated

Excellent .. many thanks for the ID
It may be some time before I have a chance to visit the island again but when I do I shall see if I can go about collecting one. Knowing that they should be around palms will be of great help.

Speaking of which, now that I think about it both times I encountered this weevil it was within five feet of a Mediterranean Fan Palm. Mediterranean Fan Palm = genus Chamaerops = maybe D. chaemeropis ??

wow... thanks much, gentlemen
hope the two of you make an arrangement and Charlie gets the bugs...
i'll notify our colleagues who track 'new arrivals' in California

Moved from Notolomus.

ID
Derelomus probably chaemeropis (Fabricius) or subcostatus Boheman both from the Mediterranean on palms. Either would be new to the US.Note that Notolomus is not known west of TX in the US. With one or more specimens I could ID the species.

Moved tentatively
Moved from ID Request.
