great example of the age-related dark coloration
I don't know how long it takes for the beetles to darken from the initial light gray to this almost-black purple, but the fact that such an old individual is out in early May might indicate that it overwintered as an adult - demonstrating that lady beetles are among the more long-lived adult insects.
