Polyphemus Moth - Antheraea polyphemus

Polyphemus Moth - Antheraea polyphemus
Great Falls, Virginia, USA
May 24, 2004
This moth was sitting in the grass in my backyard. I think it was dying. It was quite large (probably about 6 inches from wing-tip to wing-tip.) It had some SPECTACULAR antennae.

A frontal view is shown in the linked image:

Ployphemus Moth
Hello Duncan,

It looks to be a Polyphemus Moth (perhaps a female), which is one of the largest Saturniid moths in N. America. What a nice find!
