Bee Fly, no kidding? I never thought to even look there. It is quite beautiful.
Thanks,
Jeanne

Thevenetimyia
I assume it's Thevenetimyia. I leave positive ID to the experts.

Having a view of the front of the face really makes a big difference to me in distinguishing bee flies from longlegged flies. From behind this one really looks like a longlegged fly at first glance.

There are some really strange bee flies.
There are also a lot of bee flies that don't like to show their faces.

Fantastic website, Ron! I just found a few other flies there that look a lot like other unnamed images in my files.
Thanks,

Our pleasure, Jeanne.
My associate and site founder Peter Bryant has a really good way of organizing the bee flies.

Thanks
Bookmarked. I guess I need to revise how I recognize them. I think the first one I paid any attention to was a Greater Bee Fly. At the time, I was in high school, and I didn't know what it was, so I called it a bumble mosquito, because it looked like a cross between a bumblebee and a mosquito.

If you happen to know what species it is, let me know. I don't have a more detailed picture. This picture was taken on Kodachrome film in 1981 or 1982.

Complicated wings
This fly has complicated wing veins. Dolichopodidae have simple wing veins.

Good assumption, John.
