My daughter noticed this crawling on the ground at the edge of conifer forest.

looks like
N. sylvaticus is by far the most commonly collected beetle of this genus in the region, including at least a couple of collections from where I live (and not too terribly far from where this one was found). Not sure if these can be identified by photo alone, however.
