Notched Mouth Ground Beetle - Dicaelus dilatatus

Notched Mouth Ground Beetle - Dicaelus dilatatus
American Tobacco Trail, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 30, 2004
Size: 24 mm
Found in the late afternoon, running across a dirt path in a power line right-of-way, near deciduous woodlands. Captured, chilled and posed for this photo. (Like most ground beetles, refrigerator temperatures barely slowed it down.)

Length measured at 24 mm by photographing adjacent to a scale. This is probably Dicaelus dilatatus, based on size, pronotal punctures, and description of coloration in Ciegler's Ground Beetles of South Carolina. (1)
Location circa: 35.884900, -78.934226
