Rio Grande thread-legged katydid - Arethaea phantasma - male

Rio Grande thread-legged katydid - Arethaea phantasma - Male
Rancho La Lomitas, Starr County, Texas, USA
October 21, 2006
Size: 40 mm
Detail of body, head. Note saddle-shaped pronotum, distinctive for this genus, see SINA key and Capinera (1). Looking at the list of species at SINA and clicking on the range maps, it seems that the species possibilities for this locality are: The pronotal shapes are somewhat different, shown well in those photos. In particular, the rear margin of the pronotum of A. phantasma is rounded, with some dashes--that seems to match the photo here and not the other two presumed possible species. Based on those photos of specimens and the range maps, I'd say this is A. phantasma, the Rio Grande thread-legged katydid.
