Unknown ant - harvester ant, fire ant?? -
Pogonomyrmex
Near Durango, La Plata County, Colorado, USA
September 27, 2013
Size: 8 - 9mm
Two spikes on the propodeum, distinct spine on the postpetiole. Hairy gaster and large mandibles. Very aggressive ants with a lingering painful sting.

I'm curious to see what this is. I'm guessing Pogonomyrmex, but the ones I know are generally docile. I think fire ants can be eliminated.

Yes, I would say Pogonomyrmex too. These particular ants were found on a river bank. They did seem more aggressive than your typical harvester ant. So what kind?
