Leaf mining fly - Pegomya - Male
Sitka County, Alaska, USA

Squares are 5mm. I collected leaf miners earlier in the summer and noticed an adult fly in the container a couple of days ago.

Host plant?
What plant did you find it in or under? My guess is Pegomya. It is Muscoidea, looks right for Anthomyiidae, and most Anthomyiidae are not leaf miners.

This is a male and an expert might be able to identify the specimen to species.

I collected them when they were still larva in Gmelin's Saltbrush (Atriplex gmelinii) leaves. (Chenopodiaceae is the family.) I thought I photographed the leaves at the time, but apparently didn't (I've photographed the mines previously, however). There isn't really much of a pattern to the line, they mine out much of the leaf, and I think they will actually sometimes move to a second one (based on previous collections I made). This is a plant that grows right along the upper edge of the beach.

Pegomya betae
The most likely species is Pegomya betae which mines Atriplex among other Chenopodiaceae.

If you can part with the specimen you may be able to have an expert confirm.

Atriplex miners
The only other Nearctic Pegomya recorded from Atriplex is P. hyoscyami. No leafminers (Pegomya or otherwise) have been reported from A. gmelinii in particular, so it would definitely be worth sending these to a specialist.
