I found this spider hanging by a single thread midday in my backyard.

Moved from Spiders. I think Laura is probably right. This spider is a dead ringer for 631728. It would still be nice to have a ventral shot though.

Yep,
thank you for adding a ventral, it's consistent with Eriophora.

The shape of the carapace
and the setae at the front of the abdomen lead us to suspect Eriophora ravilla instead. Let's see what others think.

 
It's missing the red gems at
It's missing the red gems at the bottom of the abdomen.So far I have never encountered a live Eriophora ravilla lacking this feature.

Looks like a male Neoscona crucifera, not dangerous to humans.
