Size: 10 mm
A syrphid that resembles a conopid--thanks for correction--see comments. Size estimated. I saw a few of these about flowers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Pseudodoros
It looks like a Conopid, but it is not... It is a beautiful shot of a male Pseudodoros... Their larvae are feeding on aphids and scales...

Wasp mimicry?
I think the Conopids are thought to be wasp mimics--that's what I usually mistake them for--they look a lot like Eumenes, for instance. This syrphid is perhaps playing the same game.
