Fly Portrait
Springfield, Virginia, USA
October 8, 2004
Probably not the best angle for identification, but I enjoyed seeing the other fly closeups recently posted so I've decided to add this one. There were lots of these flies in my yard, and I never paid them much attention, except I did notice they had bright gold faces which I tried to capture in the photograph. Any help identifying is appreciated.

Flesh!
The picture is clear enough to see that it is a fleshfly (family Sarcophagidae). The combination of head shape and colour pattern in this kind of calyptrate fly is enhough. I do not expect any further identification than this because the family is notoriously difficult for further identification, where you often have to revert to the naughty bits to make sure what species you have. ;-)

Ugh! What Pests!
This looks like the "huge houseflies" we've noticed in the house today. Makes a lot of sense. The cat has a habit of running into the cellar with mice she's caught outside - and not always killing them (Usually she does - love those presents!;) ). One must have gotten away and died. Have to pull things apart this weekend til I locate the remains. Such joy!

Flesh Fly
Thanks for the help, Paul.

And great feet too!
Look like reindeer hooves!
