Thanks Kelsey. Helophilus fasciatus seems to be the common species in the genus around here.

I think Helophilus fasciatus
I think
Helophilus fasciatus
based on the reddish facial stripe and very narrow eye spacing on this male...?

Two temperate species
Only two species of
Helophilus
are found south of the boreal and transition zones,
fasciatus
and
latifrons
. In the CNC Syrphidae pages, you can think of southern Ontario as temperate, similar to southern New England. Central Ontario is transition, similar to northern New England.
In the 1965 catalog of Diptera, a southernmost record of "N.H." probably refers to the White Mountains. For example,
"hybridus Loew, 1846a: 141.--Europe; Alaska to N.S., s. to B.C., Utah, N. Dak., and N.H., Europe."
This is a boreal species. North Dakota has an extension of Canadian climate. You can see this on the USDA zone maps. New Hampshire has an island of Canadian climate. Many species follow the Rocky Mountains south in the West.
