probably S. subterraneus
did you measure the size?

Ditto your comments --
probably you also thought (dangerously) that the antennomeres appear rather roundish, not elongated as in S. vicinus. I'm surprised that frequent contributor "roar" would have omitted such an important piece of evidence as body length for separating the two species. Unlike the notorious case of S. vicinus vs S. quadriceps, the relative metasternum length (revealed in a ventral shot) is not a useful character for separating S. vicinus and S. subterraneus.

I forgot to measure this one
I still have the beetle alive so when I get my new flash I will be able to re-shoot him. I'll measure this one when I get a chance later today.

19mm

According to the Scarites Info page...
S. vicinus > 21 mm vs S. subterraneus < 21 mm. Must be the latter.

Dorcus parallelus
I would guess it is a stag beetle.

no, the prelim. ID is correct, this is Scarites
but a ventral shot would be needed for an ID most likely

no, not a stag, certainly Scarites sp.
