this species isn't even in that book yet. When was it discovered in CA?

Could not find the exact date but it is since the late 1990s and it is the only Bactrocera we do not fight anymore because it became established....

After posting these I recalled that I had the Handbook by Foote et al. (1993) and could have keyed it.

 
Well you suspected it correct
Well you suspected it correctly! And this is exactly my line of work, to ID the different species of Bactrocera... B. correcta and B zonata have been found in CA and they look similar to B oleae, so keep an eye open for these dangerous pests.

I see, the apical wing spots are quite similar on those other two spp.
